Do I need A-levels to go to university?

Not always. Many universities consider mature applicants on their work experience, Access to Higher Education Diplomas, BTECs or other qualifications, and some courses include a foundation year. We will tell you which routes are open to you.

Paying for university

Eligible UK students can usually apply for a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan through Student Finance, which you repay only once you earn above a set threshold.

For full-time courses in England starting between August and December 2026, Student Finance England offers:

  • Tuition Fee Loan: up to £9,790 a year, paid straight to your university (up to £5,760 or £9,790 for a foundation year, depending on the course).
  • Maintenance Loan for living costs: up to £9,118 if you live with your parents, £10,830 if you live away from home outside London, or £14,135 if you live away from home in London, depending on your household income.

You can apply before you have a confirmed place, and it takes about four weeks to process, so apply early. Check your eligibility and the current amounts on GOV.UK: Student finance, then apply online for student finance.
