Study in the UK from Nigeria

The UK is the most popular destination for Nigerian students, thanks to one-year master's degrees, a shared language and strong links between the two countries. Most undergraduate degrees take three years and most taught master's take one year, which can mean lower total tuition and living costs than in many other countries.

Entry requirements depend on the course and university. For master's degrees, universities look at your degree classification (First Class, Second Class Upper or Second Class Lower) or CGPA. For undergraduate entry, they look at your WAEC or NECO results, and some ask for a foundation year first.

English language requirements for Nigerian students

Nigeria is an English-speaking country, and many UK universities accept a strong English result in your WAEC or NECO certificate in place of IELTS. Others ask for IELTS, PTE or another test. We check each university's policy for you so you only take a test if you need one.

UK student visa from Nigeria: what to expect

Once you accept an offer and pay any deposit, the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). With your CAS you can apply for a UK Student visa. You will usually need:

  • A valid passport and your CAS
  • Proof that you have enough money for tuition and living costs, held for at least 28 consecutive days
  • A tuberculosis (TB) test certificate from an approved clinic
  • Academic documents listed on your CAS

You will also pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Our portal's finance tools check your funds and bank statements against the rules before you apply.

Check the full, current requirements on the GOV.UK Student visa page before you apply.

Can I bring my family? Under current rules, most students on taught master's courses cannot bring dependants to the UK; postgraduate research students (for example, PhD) usually can. We will explain the rules that apply to your course. Check the current rules on GOV.UK.

Study in Canada and the USA from Nigeria

Canada and the USA are strong alternatives, with colleges and universities offering practical, career-focused programmes. Through partners such as University Canada West, Niagara Falls Canada, George Mason University and Texas State University, we help Nigerian students compare costs, entry requirements and visa steps for each country.
