Study in the UK and Europe from the USA

A UK master's degree usually takes one year instead of two, and a bachelor's degree usually takes three years. For many American students, that means less time out of work and a lower total cost. EduQuantica, headquartered in London, helps you choose and apply to UK and European universities, free of charge.

Why study in the UK as an American

  • Shorter degrees — three years for most bachelor's degrees and one year for most taught master's degrees
  • Specialise from day one — you study your chosen subject from the start, without a broad general-education requirement
  • World-recognised universities whose degrees are respected by US employers and graduate schools
  • No language barrier — teaching is in English, and US nationals usually meet the visa's English requirement automatically
  • Europe on your doorstep for travel, internships and international experience during your degree
  • Free admissions support from a London-based team that knows UK universities first-hand

One-year master's degrees explained

Most UK taught master's degrees (MA, MSc, MBA, LLM) run for 12 months full-time: two terms of taught modules followed by a dissertation or project over the summer. Because the course is shorter, you pay one year of tuition and one year of living costs, and you are back in the job market a year earlier than on a typical two-year US programme.

A one-year master's is intensive, so universities look closely at your bachelor's degree, your GPA and how your past studies or work experience relate to the course. Some programmes also offer a placement year or a two-year option if you want more time or industry experience. Your counsellor will help you weigh up the options and find courses where you have a strong chance of an offer.

Can I use US federal student aid abroad?

Many UK universities are approved to accept US federal Direct Loans — check each university.

If a UK university takes part in the US federal student aid programme, eligible US citizens can usually use Direct Loans (including Grad PLUS loans for postgraduate study) towards tuition and living costs. Pell Grants generally cannot be used abroad. You apply through the FAFSA using the university's federal school code, and the university's financial aid office certifies the loan. Find out more at studentaid.gov.

Private US loans, 529 savings plans and UK university scholarships can also help. We tell you which of your shortlisted universities accept federal aid before you apply.

English-taught degrees in Europe

If you want to study on the continent, universities in countries such as Germany, the Netherlands and Spain offer degrees taught entirely in English, often with lower tuition than in the US. Entry rules, fees and visas differ by country, so we help you compare them side by side with the UK.

Applying from the USA, step by step

For a bachelor's degree, you apply through UCAS, the UK's central admissions service. You can choose up to five courses with one application and one personal statement. UK universities look at your high school diploma and GPA alongside Advanced Placement (AP) results, SAT or ACT scores, or an IB Diploma, depending on the course. Applications for most courses open in the autumn, and the main deadline falls in January for entry the following September — check the exact date on UCAS.

For a master's degree, you usually apply directly to each university with your bachelor's transcript, a personal statement, references and a CV. Many courses have rolling admissions, so applying early gives you the best choice of places and scholarships.

Student visa basics

US citizens need a Student visa for a UK course longer than six months. For a short course of up to six months you can usually study as a visitor, with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). For a Student visa you will usually need:

  • Your passport and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university
  • Enough money for your tuition and living costs (as a US citizen, you don't usually need to upload bank statements)
  • Any academic documents listed on your CAS

As a US national, you meet the visa's English language requirement automatically and do not need a tuberculosis (TB) test. You will pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, which gives you access to the NHS.

Check the full, current requirements on the GOV.UK Student visa page before you apply.

Do I need bank statements or an English test for the visa?

Good news for American students: as a US citizen, you don't usually need to submit bank statements with your Student visa application, and you don't need to prove your English for the visa.

Who needs to show maintenance funds and prove English for a UK Student visa
Your nationalityBank statements (maintenance funds)Prove English for the visa
United StatesNot usuallyNot needed
  • "Not usually" for bank statements means your nationality is on the UK's differential evidence list. You don't need to upload bank statements with your visa application, but you must still have the money for your tuition and living costs, and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) may ask you for evidence after you apply.
  • Already in the UK? If you have held a valid UK visa for at least 12 months when you apply, you don't need to prove your funds, whatever your nationality.
  • English for your university is separate from the visa. For degree-level courses, your university assesses your English to at least CEFR level B2 and may still ask for a test such as IELTS, even if the visa doesn't.
  • Other ways to prove English include an English GCSE or A-level, a UK degree, or a degree taught in English that Ecctis confirms is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree.

What it costs to study in the UK

For Student visa applications submitted on or after 30 November 2026, you need to show £1,570 a month for living costs if you study in London, or £1,203 a month elsewhere in the UK, for up to nine months, plus any first-year tuition you have not yet paid. The visa application fee is £558 from outside the UK, and the Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 per year. Our UK cost guide has tuition ranges, living-cost budgets and worked examples.

Most students on a degree-level course can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time in official vacations. After you graduate, the Graduate route lets you stay and work in the UK for at least 18 months. Check the current rules on the GOV.UK Graduate visa page.
