Most UK master's courses are applied for directly through each university, not UCAS. This step-by-step guide for Pakistani students covers choosing a course, English requirements, CAS, ATAS, money, scholarships, TB testing and the Student visa timeline.

Planning a UK master's degree from Pakistan? Most taught master's courses in the UK are not applied for through UCAS. Instead, you usually apply straight to each university through its own website. That gives you more flexibility, but it also means you manage each stage yourself.

This guide takes you through the process step by step: choosing a course, applying, meeting the English requirement, getting your CAS, planning your money and preparing for the Student visa. Rules and fees change, so we link to the official page for every figure.

Step 1: Shortlist courses for your UK master's degree from Pakistan

Start with the subject, not the university name. A course that matches your degree and career plans will be easier to apply for and easier to explain in your personal statement.

Each university sets its own entry requirements. Read the course page carefully and check how the university treats Pakistani qualifications. If the page does not say, email the admissions team and ask before you apply.

What to compare

  • Course content: the modules, the dissertation or project, and any placement options.
  • Start dates: intakes vary by university and by course.
  • Tuition fees: look for the international fee, not the home fee.
  • Location: studying in London means you must show more money for living costs on your visa application (see Step 5).
  • ATAS: some science, engineering and technology subjects need an extra security clearance (see Step 4).

You can browse options on our course search and read our overview of studying in the UK.

Step 2: Apply directly to the university

According to the British Council's Study UK postgraduate guide, many UK universities run their own postgraduate applications, and you can often apply on their website. UCAS handles postgraduate applications only for some routes, such as conservatoires and teacher training.

Many postgraduate courses have no fixed closing date. Even so, popular courses can fill up, so it is sensible to apply early.

Documents you will usually need

Exact requirements differ, so always check each course page. Most applications ask for:

  • your personal details and academic qualifications, such as degree transcripts and certificates
  • contact details for a referee, such as a lecturer, who can comment on your suitability
  • a personal statement
  • evidence of your English level, or a plan to provide it
  • a CV, for some courses

Writing a strong personal statement

Your personal statement should explain why you want this particular course and why you are ready for it. Keep it specific:

  • name modules or research areas that interest you and say why
  • link your undergraduate studies, projects or work experience to the course
  • explain what you plan to do after you graduate

Write a separate statement for each course. A general statement sent to five universities is easy for admissions staff to spot.

Step 3: Meet the English language requirement

For a Student visa at degree level or above, the Home Office requires English at CEFR level B2. CEFR is the Common European Framework of Reference, an international scale for language ability. The rules are on the GOV.UK knowledge of English page.

Pakistan is not on the list of countries whose nationals are exempt. You can usually show your English in one of these ways:

  • University assessment: if you are studying at degree level or above, the university can assess your English itself. The result must still be equivalent to CEFR B2.
  • A degree taught in English: if your degree from outside the UK was taught in English, you can get an assessment from Ecctis, the UK agency that compares international qualifications.
  • A Secure English Language Test (SELT): a test from a Home Office-approved provider.

Remember that a university can ask for a higher level than the visa minimum. Check the course's own English requirement as well as the visa rule.

Step 4: Accept your offer, check ATAS and get your CAS

Offers are often conditional at first. This means you must meet certain conditions, such as finishing your degree or providing an English test result. Once you meet them, the offer becomes unconditional.

What is a CAS?

A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is an electronic reference number your university usually issues once you have accepted an unconditional offer and met its requirements. You need it to apply for your Student visa. Only universities that are licensed student sponsors can issue a CAS, so check the university holds a licence.

Do you need an ATAS certificate?

ATAS stands for the Academic Technology Approval Scheme. It applies to some master's and PhD courses in sensitive science and technology subjects. Pakistani nationals are not on the exempt list, so if your course needs ATAS, you must get a certificate before you apply for your visa.

Key points from the GOV.UK ATAS guidance:

  • your university can tell you whether your course needs ATAS
  • processing takes at least 30 working days (six weeks) and can take longer between April and August
  • there is no fast-track service
  • a certificate is valid for six months for visa applications

Step 5: Plan your money

Your visa application will need evidence that you can pay your course fees and support yourself. Budget for these costs early.

Tuition fees

You must show you can pay the course fees for one academic year (up to nine months). The amount appears on your CAS, minus anything you have already paid.

Living costs (the maintenance requirement)

At the time of writing, the GOV.UK Student visa money page lists:

  • £1,529 a month for courses in London
  • £1,171 a month for courses outside London
  • for up to nine months

You must have held the money for at least 28 consecutive days, and that period must end within 31 days of your visa application. The government has also confirmed an annual increase to this requirement from 30 November 2026, so check the money page for the amount that applies on the date you apply.

Visa fee and health surcharge

  • The Student visa fee from outside the UK is £558.
  • The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is £776 a year for students. You pay it as part of your visa application.

Scholarships for Pakistani students

Funding is competitive, so plan ahead:

  • Chevening: the UK government's scholarship for one-year master's courses. Applications for 2027-28 opened in August 2026 and have now closed, so plan for the next cycle.
  • Commonwealth Scholarships: Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC) nominates candidates. For 2027-28, the deadline was 20 October 2026, so look out for the next round.
  • GREAT Scholarships: Study UK lists GREAT Scholarships for students from Pakistan, worth £10,000 towards tuition fees for one-year taught postgraduate courses at participating universities. The current listing covers 2026-27, so check whether 2027-28 awards have been announced. You apply through each university.
  • University scholarships: many universities offer their own awards for international students.

Search current awards on our scholarships page.

Step 6: Get a TB test and apply for your Student visa

If you are coming to the UK for six months or more from Pakistan, you need a tuberculosis (TB) test at a Home Office-approved clinic. GOV.UK publishes the list of approved clinics in Pakistan, with clinics in cities including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Mirpur. The certificate is valid for six months from the date of your x-ray.

According to the GOV.UK Student visa page, you can apply up to six months before your course starts, and you will usually get a decision within three weeks if you apply from outside the UK. You will typically need:

  • a current passport
  • your CAS
  • evidence of money for fees and living costs
  • your ATAS certificate, if your course requires one
  • your TB test certificate

Can your family come with you?

Under the current rules, students on most taught master's courses cannot bring dependants. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, only students on a PhD, other doctorate or research-based higher degree can bring a partner or children. Government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months are also eligible. Read the full family members rules before you make plans.

EduQuantica does not give immigration advice. For our students, UK Student visa applications are handled by Internations Legal LLP, a solicitor firm regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).

Step 7: Know your options after graduation

The Graduate route lets you stay in the UK to work or look for work after you finish your degree. The length depends on when you apply:

  • two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026
  • 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027

So a student starting a master's in 2027 would apply under the 18-month rule. The application fee is £937, plus the health surcharge. Details are on the Graduate visa page.

A suggested timeline

  • 9–12 months before your start date: research courses, universities and scholarships.
  • 6–9 months before: prepare documents and submit applications.
  • After your offer: meet the conditions and accept the offer. Apply for ATAS straight away if you need it.
  • 3–6 months before: start holding your funds, book your TB test and get your CAS.
  • Up to 6 months before: apply for your Student visa.

Frequently asked questions

Do I apply through UCAS for a UK master's degree from Pakistan?

Usually not. Many UK universities run their own postgraduate applications, so you apply on each university's website. UCAS handles postgraduate applications only for some routes, such as conservatoires and teacher training. Always follow the instructions on the course page.

What English level do I need for a UK Student visa at master's level?

For study at degree level or above, the Home Office requires CEFR level B2. You can show this through an assessment by your university, an Ecctis assessment of a degree taught in English, or a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Your university may ask for a higher level, so check the course page too.

Can I bring my family on a taught master's course?

In most cases, no. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, only students on a PhD, other doctorate or research-based higher degree can bring dependants. Government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months are also eligible. See the GOV.UK family members page for the full rules.

How long can I stay in the UK after my master's?

The Graduate route gives two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. Students starting a master's in 2027 would fall under the 18-month rule. Check the GOV.UK Graduate visa page for current details.

Do Pakistani students need a TB test for a UK Student visa?

Yes, if you are coming to the UK for six months or more. You must take the test at a Home Office-approved clinic, and GOV.UK lists the approved clinics in Pakistan. The certificate is valid for six months from the date of your x-ray.
